Watermelon, an effective health supplement

_ Watermelons are belongs to Cucurbitaceae family and there are more than 1200 of varieties found around the world. It is very effective for human health in various aspects.

It is a summer fruit and can be consumed in many ways like eaten raw or as a juice and can be added to the salad in combination of other fruits.

Water melon helps in reducing our body temperature and blood pressure. This fruit also helps in reducing inflammatory diseases like asthma and arthritis. It also plays important role in atherosclerosis, diabetes, colon cancer.

Watermelon contains vitamin C, beta-carotene, citrulline and lycopene. Watermelon also contains vitamins B1 and B6, pantothenic acid, biotin, magnesium, potassium and dietary fiber.

As watermelon is a loaded natural source of lycopene, a carotenoid of great interest. lycopene has antioxidant capacity which leads to possible health benefits. Dietary consumption of the lycopene lowers risk of prostate cancer. Studies have shown that increased consumption of lycopene-containing foodstuffs might reduce the occurrence or progression of prostate cancer which can be blockbuster in prostate cancer patients.

Watermelon is a rich source of citrulline as well. Citrulline is an amino acid that is metabolized to arginine, an essential amino acid. Study shows watermelon juice consumption increases fasting concentrations of plasma arginine, ornithine, and citrulline in healthy humans. This plasma concentration of arginine could be increased through intake of citrulline from watermelon. As watermelon also contains chief amino acid, arginine, which helps to maintain arteries blood flow and overall heart issues. The amino acids also improve body’s sensitivity towards insulin hence helpful in diabetic patients.

Arginine plays an important part in the healing of wounds and the removal of ammonia from the body. The removal of ammonia in the blood helps in fatigue, kidney and liver disease. Arginine is the physiologic originator in the formation of nitric oxide (NO), which plays a crucial role in many biological processes such as platelet aggregation and immune system modulation.

Arginine also helps to improve sexual function in men. So it is good for those facing problems like impotence and thus improves our sexual relationships with our partner.

Watermelon is a magnificent stress buster. As it is rich in vitamin B6, and is used by the body to produce brain chemicals, which relieves stress, anxiety and panic attacks in human being. It naturally relaxes the blood vessels.

Not only watermelon pulp but also watermelon seeds are also available in the markets in dried form and have high nutrition in it. These seed contains high levels of magnesium and also contains high amount of protein and fat. It can be eaten as toppings on cakes, salads or with grains and are highly suggested for people on a low calorie diet and weight loss.

Overall, with such great characteristics, watermelon is really helpful in maintaining good health. So eat a good amount of watermelon and be healthy and happy.
